The book is based on contemporary linguistic theory and research, and teaching methodology, and makes use of corpora of authentic texts. Its purpose is to help users become familiarized with the specialized language used in these disciplines and develop a wide range of transferable linguistic, academic and study skills, as well as their critical thinking skills, which are essential for higher education and their professional settings. The genres it is comprised of range from scientific articles to experiment reports, conference posters, textbook extracts and popularized articles. The language skills to be developed include speaking, listening, reading and writing following the appropriate conventions, as well presenting at conferences and communicating in the workplace and other contexts.
